So I have a question. I play a lot on nl texas holdem tournaments and I am looking for a poker tournament software or perhaps some poker tips that can help me take down a few tournaments. I have been doing some research and have looked through various poker tournament software products. I talk a lot on other forums and people have been giving me great poker tips such as how they should be betting. So I guess where I am going with this is out of all the poker tips and advice I have gotten, if you had to sumarize the 3 most important poker tips what would they be? Would this be for me to buy a texas holdem software or poker tournament software? Please help because I want to take down one of these online poker tournaments! Thanks for your help guys!

It doesn’t matter what texas holdem software you are using if you are not playing within your bankroll. If you buy in for money that you can’t afford to lose then you might not play correctly. The second most important thing out of my poker tips would be to concentrate on the size of your bets! If you bet too much with your big hands you might scare your opponent away. However, if you bet too small your opponent might be able to draw on you cheaply and beat you for a cheap price. In my opinion, the most important aspect of any poker variant is position. You need to learn about position and why it’s so important before you branch out into other aspects.
Poker software can help you out. Personally I don’t think it’s essential but i do know plenty of profitable online players that don’t play without some sort of heads up display. The greatest advantage of tracking softwares (i.e poker office) is that you can go back over your game and work out what positions on the table you’re losing from, what hands you’re losing from, what draws you’re losing from, etc, so it’s easier to find where the leaks are in your game. They can also give you instant stats on the players you’re playing against, so you don’t have to be as observant.
Another great way to help find leaks in your game without buying software is to post hand histories for others to analyse for you. If you’re ever in doubt about the way you played a hand, copy the hand history or hand replay screen and post it up so others can help you find the best way to play certain hands. Our new forums (see link below) have a section dedicated to hand analysis, so you’ll find people there that are happy to lend advice onthis and other matters.
Lastly, poker software is often more of an advantage in cash games. If you can, I’d be trying to take make some money from poker before you go out buying software, especially if you’re predominantly playing tournaments.

I would suggest that you read a few books on poker strategy and theory. For tournament play I can recommend the Harrington Series:

He also has some books on playing cash games that are good too. You could try these as well. Some players are just better at tournaments and some are better at cash games. You will have to find out which you prefer.
One more possibility: take online poker courses. You learn the basics and they even give you a bonus when you’ve finished the course- often after giving a quiz or something. This is a great way to get your free starting capitol to try out and practise what you’ve learned in the courses.
