This is a very difficult question to answer without more information about the size, structure and skill level of the game itself. I would advise you to pick up a book or two on the subject if you are serious about winning– I have read most of them and I find Phil Gordon’s three-book series to be excellent for beginners, as well as the works of Dan Harrington.

If you’re just there to have fun and don’t want the hassle, there are only a few words of advice I can give you without knowing more specifics about the game.

1) Don’t play too many hands. This is difficult for most beginners, especially in smaller home games. You want to get in there and mix it up, and get bored not playing many hands. Tighten up a bit and you will see better results.

2) Learn the concept of pot odds. The math is more simple than most people think, and in the long term, it can serve you well. If you never crack a book on poker, you should at least familiarize yourself with this concept. Playing A-B-C Poker in a game such as the one you describe is often the best way to win, and pot odds play a large role in this. Google it, study and understand.

3) Know your opponents. This may seem like an advanced part of the game, but it can be invaluable at all levels and even experienced players ignore this advice to their own peril. Without a lot of experience, you won’t know when you’re in a bad spot based on betting patterns or the cards alone. So ask yourself– is this guy more likely to be bluffing or holding the goods? Then, act accordingly. A good fold is arguably better than a good bluff or call.

The best way to learn the game is to start with a good foundation (book knowledge) and augment it with experience. The more hands you play and the better competition you face, your skills will increase if you focus on what you’re doing and analyze everything you see.

Ok first of all skill in poker is the ability to minize your losses. Don’t fall in love with every pocket pair.
Second in a ten dollar poker game don’t try to bluff if the pots big enough you will get called.
Next if there is a possible higher hand on the board than yours check the hand if there is a higher hand out there you will be raised maximizing your losses( what you are tring to avoid)
Last of all do not watch the world poker tour on tv. IN the final table of the WPT the antes and blinds
the players are playing hands they normally would not play, but have to because they only have enough money for a few more hands.
